Every pregnant person hits a point where every twinge, cramp, and backache makes them wonder: ""Is this it?"" I've been on the receiving end of that question thousands of times, and I want to help you figure it out.
\n\n1. Contractions That Don't Quit
\n\nReal labor contractions are consistent and progressive. They get stronger, longer, and closer together over time. Unlike Braxton Hicks, they don't stop when you drink water, change positions, or take a warm bath. If you've been timing them and they're following that pattern — pay attention.
\n\n2. Your Water Breaks
\n\nDespite what movies show, only about 15% of people experience their water breaking before labor starts. And it's not always a dramatic gush — sometimes it's a slow trickle that makes you wonder if you just peed yourself. Here's the test: amniotic fluid is usually clear or slightly pink, has a sweet or neutral smell (not like urine), and keeps coming. If you're unsure, put on a pad and see if it soaks through in an hour.
\n\n3. Bloody Show
\n\nThis is mucus tinged with blood — pink, red, or brown. It happens when your cervix starts dilating and the mucus plug comes loose. It can happen days before labor or right as things get going. Light spotting after a cervical check is normal and doesn't count.
\n\n4. Intense Lower Back Pain
\n\nSome people experience ""back labor,"" where contractions are felt primarily in the lower back rather than the front. This often happens when baby is in the occiput posterior position (sunny-side up). If you're having regular, intensifying back pain that comes in waves — that's likely labor.
\n\n5. The ""Something Is Different"" Feeling
\n\nI know this sounds vague, but experienced labor nurses know what I mean. Many patients describe a shift — a feeling that something has changed. Maybe it's nesting energy, maybe it's looser stools, maybe it's just a gut feeling. Your body knows things before your brain catches up.
\n\nWhat ISN'T a Sign of Labor
\n\n- \n
- Irregular contractions that stop and start \n
- Lightning crotch (sharp pelvic pain from baby's position) \n
- Increased discharge without blood \n
- Nesting urges alone \n
