I've seen hundreds of hospital bags come through labor and delivery. Some are perfectly packed; others have enough stuff for a week-long vacation. Here's the truth: you need way less than you think, and the hospital provides more than you realize.
\n\nThe Essentials (Don't Leave Without These)
\n\n- \n
- Phone and a LONG charger cable — you'll want to reach the outlet from the bed \n
- Your ID and insurance card \n
- Comfortable going-home outfit — think elastic waistband, nothing fancy. You'll still look 6 months pregnant. \n
- Car seat (installed!) — they won't let you leave without one \n
- Going-home outfit for baby — one outfit plus a backup (blowouts happen) \n
- Your own pillow — hospital pillows are terrible. Use a colored pillowcase so it doesn't get mixed in with hospital linens. \n
- Toiletries — toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, lip balm (hospitals are DRY), face wash, hair ties \n
Nice to Have (But Not Required)
\n\n- \n
- Robe or cozy cardigan — hospital gowns are drafty, and a robe makes you feel more human for visitors and hallway walks \n
- Slippers or non-slip socks — the floors are cold \n
- Bluetooth speaker — for your labor playlist \n
- Snacks — granola bars, crackers, nuts, dried fruit. Hospital cafeterias close, and you WILL be hungry after delivery. \n
- Nursing bra or comfortable bralette \n
- Nipple cream — if you plan to breastfeed \n
- Your own towel — hospital towels are basically sandpaper \n
For Your Support Person
\n\n- \n
- Change of clothes \n
- Snacks (lots of snacks) \n
- Phone charger \n
- Pillow and blanket (the couch/cot situation is not great) \n
- Cash for vending machines \n
What the Hospital Provides (Don't Bring These)
\n\n- \n
- Mesh underwear and pads (trust me, you want these) \n
- Peri bottle \n
- Baby diapers and wipes \n
- Swaddle blankets \n
- Baby hat \n
- Breast pump or formula (if needed) \n
- Ice packs and numbing spray \n
- Stool softener (your new best friend) \n
What to Skip
\n\nYou do NOT need: a fancy labor gown, 5 changes of clothes, books or magazines (you won't read them), your entire makeup bag, scented candles (fire hazard in hospitals), or a ""push present"" — though if your partner is reading this, just saying.
\n\nPack light. You can always send someone home for anything you forgot. And honestly? You'll spend most of your time in a hospital gown, staring at the most beautiful baby you've ever seen.
